CARING FOR OUR WATERSHEDS: Southern Alberta is open to students who live in the Alberta borders south of and including the city of Calgary. Students who live north of Calgary are asked to enter CARING FOR OUR WATERSHEDS: Central Alberta.

Students within Southern Alberta are invited to submit proposals that answer the question...

“What can you do to improve your watershed?"

  • Students will compete for over $6,000 in rewards
  • Participating schools are eligible for over $11,000 in rewards
  • Students who implement their ideas are eligible for additional funding

Agrium Wins Alberta Emerald Award!

Agrium’s Caring for our Watersheds (CFW) program is the proud recipient of a 2011 Alberta Emerald Award in the Education: Non-Formal category.

“The Emerald Award is like winning an Oscar for environmental stewardship in Alberta. It is a huge accomplishment to win this prestigious award and we are very honoured,” said Lindsey Metheral, Agrium Program Coordinator. “The Caring for our Watersheds program continues to grow thanks to our community partners who are dedicated to mentoring the students on the state of their local watershed.”

2011 Winners Announced

Thank you to all of the students, teachers and volunteers who participated. Over 100 entries were received. In a verbal competition on May 1, 2011 at the Calgary Zoo the top entries presented their project ideas on how to improve their local watershed.

Katie Beever and Katie Coyes from MidSun School in Calgary placed first in the Grades 7-9 Category for their idea to increase awareness about keeping prescription drugs out of the watershed.

Samantha Hans from Bishop Carroll High School in Calgary placed first in the Grades 10-12 Category with a project to organize classrooms who would then plant native plants along the Bow River to reduce erosion.
